I am the Middle School (grades 6 through 8) Math teacher at St. Charles school. This is my third year in this position, but my tenth as a St. Charles School employee. My evolution to this point has been a bit untraditional.
My bachelor’s degree from the University of Wisconsin was in Structural Engineering. I worked in that capacity until shortly after our eldest daughter, Anna, was born. My husband, Tom, and I decided that my staying home was the best choice for us, and I must say that I felt extremely privileged to have that option. I remained an at-home mom until our younger daughter, Greta, began Kindergarten at St. Charles School. Sister Rosemary (the principal at that time) asked if I’d like to help out as an aide and I was thrilled! I didn’t have to let go of my girls! The first year, I helped out in the Kindergarten classroom and just about every other classroom over the next two years. The following five years were spent as the Middle School Math aide – which I loved! I’d found another calling! I went back to school and obtained my teaching license in 2007. That was the year I took over as the Middle School Math teacher, the position I currently hold.
I absolutely love working with and helping the students. I believe teachers, parents, and all individuals working with children in a Christian school want the same three things for the children:
1) To behave in a Christian manner
2) To be successful
3) To be happy
How these three things are defined, valued and weighted varies greatly between individual students, families, coaches, and teachers. I think that the most important things for me to live by as a professional educator are to listen, respect diversity, and remember that we’re all God’s children.
