Fifth Grade

Fifth grade strives to teach children how to learn. The emphasis of classroom activities, projects, and instruction is structured to teach critical thinking skills. Fifth grade promotes in students mastery of core knowledge that is essential to their competence as learners in later grades.

The daily schedule includes classes in religion, reading, math, language arts, social studies, science, physical education, art, and computers. Each day classes begin at 8:25 and end at 3:15. The students attend Mass the first Friday of each month.

Happy New Year to everyone!  Hope everyone had a great break and a chance to enjoy time with family!  Who can believe the second quarter ends in just over a few weeks on Thurday, January 19th?  We have plenty to do in those two weeks and I am sure they will fly by before we know it.

In math, we are beginning a new chapter on Geometry which is one of my favorites.   Throughout the chapter, students will be taking notes on a piece of paper which will then be able to be used on the chapter test.  There are a lot of new topics and terms to remember with Geometry so this study sheet should help out a great deal.

We will be finishing up our current chapter in Science this week.  The kids will be bringing a science study guide home with them today in order to prepare for next Tuesday\'s science test.  As always, we will go through the study guide in class and work together to solve the short answer questions.  Also, on Monday, January 9th, the kids will be having a Unit 3 Vocabulary Test in Reading.  They should have all the notes for this in their vocabulary notebooks.

Lots to inform everyone on and I feel like I am forgetting a lot of it.  Beginning next week, we will begin reading the novel, Brady, which is a personal favorite of mine.  It is a story about slaves and the Underground Railroad with a lot of action and twists and turns to keep everyone interested.  It coincides with our social studies book and the topic of slavery.  I have numerous extra copies so please let me know if you would like to borrow one and read along with us at home.

In religion, we have been discussing the different parts of the mass and what each part means.  We will continue on by learning and discussing the five different forms of prayer.  We will examine what daily prayer means to each of us and highlight some special practices and popular devotions.

 Upcoming dates to remember:

Monday. January 9th---Unit 3 Vocabulary Test

Tuesday, January 10th----Chapter 3 Science Test

Friday, January 13th----School Spelling Bee

Thursday, January 19th----2nd Quarter Ends

Take care and feel free to stop in with any questions or concerns!
