First Grade

First grade is a "primary" education. First grade is the best indicator of future academic performance in school and emphasizes the importance of a solid academic foundation. First grade students will have developed the skills necessary to progress in reading and math.
Students are in school from 8:25am to 3:15pm daily. The basis of the curriculum consists of religion, reading/language, arts, math, science, social studies, music, physical education, and art.

This week we celebrated the 100th day of school with some special activities. We read 100 books during our Tuesday reading group time. We wrote 100 words (which we spelled by ourselves)! We also did 100 jumping jacks. We created something out of the number 100 by drawing. The first graders wanted 100 pages of homework -- but I thought that was a little too much for one night! We had fun!
We are completing our unit on time and calendars. Next we will be studying place value (ones, tens, and hundreds).
We are half way through our 4th reading unit. I am still completing the testing for Unit 3 (I did not want to do it during Catholic Schools Week with all of the other activities). We have one more part to complete which should be done early next week. I will correct the tests and pass the results on to you as soon as possible.
I hope you have reviewed your child's report cards with them carefully considering areas that they can work on. Setting goals is a good idea.
I hope to see the class work on neatness (penmanship, drawing, etc.) I want their work to be their best!
