Happy New Year!
Our Geography Bee is quickly approaching with classroom level bees next week Wednesday and our School Bee on Friday, January 20th, at 10:30 in the gym. Join us if you can!
6th - 8th grades will also be taking their final "Latin America Countries" test on Wednesday, January 13th. Let's see if we can beat our "Africa Countries" test: all but 4 middle school students earned "A's"! Let's shoot for 100%!!
6th grade Social Studies:
We had a blast creating our Egypt Museum Exhibit! Outstanding job by all! I learned so many things I had previously been unaware of like the fact that Cleopatra married her brother and thick Egyptian eyeliner served the same purpose as NFL players' black face paint: to absorb and not reflect the sun. The life size sarcophagus and chariot, pyramid models, egyptian foods, games, weapons, home model, timeline, heiroglyphs, and so much more were amazing and enjoyed by all our student and parent visitors.
We're now moving on to India and learning about Hinduism and Buddhism - very interesting in the similarities to and differences from Christianity! Strange names, beautiful elephants, striking architecture, and historical technology all serve to make India an amazing place!
7th Grade Social Studies:
We're wrapping up our study of Africa by learning about modern South Africa and watching Invictus to supplement our perspective. We've finished investigating for our research papers about South Africa and will soon continue working on them. We'll take our notecards from outlines to rough drafts to final copies with bibliographies in the next week. After that, it's on to Latin America and all the Incas, Mayans, and Aztecs have to offer!!
8th grade Social Studies:
We're continuing to learn about the developing colonies: how and why they became the states they did. We've had lots of interesting debates about choices made and effects of those choices. Soon we'll investigate the Revolutionary War.
