Second Grade

Second grade is a year for your child to use and expand upon the basic skills acquired in first grade. Students become more independent learners with guidance from teachers and parents. Their knowledge expands as they become stronger readers, their writing skills rapidly develop, and spelling takes on new importance. One of the highlights of second grade is the preparation for their First Reconciliation and First Communion.
Students are in school from 8:25am to 3:15pm daily. The basis of the curriculum consists of religion, reading/language arts, math, science, social studies, music, physical education, and art.

This time of the school year contains some of the most difficult and important concepts in many subject areas of Grade Two...
In math -the concepts of regrouping in addition and subtraction as well as telling time are taught.
In language arts-writing skills are used to compose non-fiction reports and compositions. In addition, correct cursive handwriting and pronouns and adjectives are learned.
In religion-the Mass and the Sacrament of the Holy Eucharist are covered.
In reading-guidelines for the use of syllabication to read longer, unfamiliar words are presented.
So your child may come home from school more tired from concentrating hard and learning these concepts. You can help by providing for exercise, good nutrition, and enough sleep! Also, spending a little more time helping your child to correct errors on the papers sent home in the Friday Folder may help reinforce difficult concepts for your child. Thanks for all that you do.
